### Electronic Project : How to Make a DC Motor Simply

In simple words, a DC motor  is a device that converts direct current(electrical energy) into mechanical energy. To understand the operating principle of dc motor, you can look its constructional feature like in figure 1 below.

DC Motor could be powered from existing direct-current lighting power distribution systems, it is make DC Motor widely used. There are two ways to control DC motor over wide range, using either a variable supply voltage or by changing the strength of current in its field windings. Beside used in tools, toys, and appliances for special small DC motor, in propulsion of electric vehicles, elevator and hoists, or in drives for steel rolling mills Large DC motor also be used.

Using simple materials, a dc motor could be built using the forces of electricity and magnetism which can work together. The movement of tiny charged particles that make up atoms can cause the electricity and magnetism forces. The negatively charged electrons flow away from the negative terminal of the battery toward the positive end, because opposite charges attract each other, while like (similar) charges repel each other, when a wire is hooked up to a battery. Electric current is a flow of electrons through wire that produces a magnetic force.

Atoms are lined up so that the negatively charged electrons are all spinning in the same direction that any in a magnet.  The movement of the electrons creates magnetic force like in electric current. Term a magnetic field is the area around the magnet where the force is active. The magnet will pull metal objects and other magnets that enter this field. Two different poles in the magnet, a north pole and a south pole be created by the way the atoms are lined up.

Firstly, please prepare some equipment needed as follow:

1. A ‘D’ size 1.5 V battery
2. A magnet
3. A piece of copper wire
4. A ‘D’ sized battery case with spring
5. Two paper clips
6. Two rubber bands

1. Wrap cooper wire around the battery and leave around 2 inches surely on each end of the copper wire unwrapped.
2. Keeping cooper wire in a circle with slide it of the battery. Orientate it so the ends of the wires are on opposite sides.
3. To hold the structure of the loop and to keep the wire wound together, wrap the ends of the wire around the loop several times.
4. Take both paper clips and bend them to look. These will be used to hold up the copper wire wound in a circle from previous the steps.
5. Let's place the battery into the battery case.  The ‘+’ from the battery is lined up with the ‘+’ from the case surely.
6. Take stick and bent paper clips them through the holes on each side of the battery case.
7. Stretch both rubber bands around the base of the battery case to hold the bent paperclips in place.
8. For each end of the wound copper wire scraped off the outer coating, if scraped off at the wrong side the motor will not work. Very important to only scrape of the sides like shown in the picture. The purpose of scraping off the coating is so a complete circuit can be made with the battery and the copper wire. This complete circuit needs to be made when the position of the wire is like the one shown to the right. This will create a magnetic pole through the loops of the copper wire making the bottom portion of the wire want to push away from the magnet, thus making it spin.
9. Then place on top of battery the magnet. Make rest the ends of the copper wire on the bent paper clips so the wound of wire is placed above the magnet and battery.
